Gestern die ersten 3 Ausgaben von Troy Hickman’s Common Grounds gelesen. Jede Ausgabe besteht aus zwei oder mehreren Kurzgeschichten, die alle die namensgebende Coffeeshop-Kette als Handlungsort haben. Common Grounds ist nämlich der Ort, an dem Superhelden – und ihre Feinde – abhängen und sich Kaffee und Donuts gönnen. Eine nette Idee, die auch in den Stories weiter ausgestaltet wird, denn hauptsächlich geht es um die ‘menschlichen’ Seiten des Superheldendaseins. Mal mehr ernsthaft, mal eher ironisch. Man könnte Common Grounds in der Tradition des dekonstruktivistischen Superheldencomics sehen; wie es Alan Moore Ende der 80er oder auch Kurt Busiek in einigen Astro City-Episoden gemacht haben: mit den Konventionen gebrochen und dadurch das Emotionale in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Wobei bei Common Grounds immer eine ironische Note mitschwingt.
Überschattet wird das alles – zumindest für mich – von einem der lustigsten Superhelden aller Zeiten. Der hat in Ausgabe 3 von Common Grounds leider nur einen kurzen Auftritt, aber ich würde liebend gern mehr von ihm sehen. Und zwar – jetzt kommt die spannungssteigernde Hinleitung – fährt er einen VW Beetle, hat dementsprechend auch die Initialen VW auf seiner Brust, mit einem an die Front montierten Stiergeweih. Dazu passend der Helm auf dem Kopf, ebenfalls mit Stiergeweih. Gekrönt wird das Ganze von seinem Namen, einem Wortspiel so einfach und gleichzeitig so lächerlich, das zwei im Deutschen nicht ganz unbelastete Begriffe miteinander verbindet: Volkswagner!
Für Common Grounds sei hiermit eine Kaufempfehlung ausgesprochen. Und der Auftritt von Volkswagner hier in kompletter Länge:

Well, here’s an English translation:
Yesterday i read the first 3 issues of Troy Hickman’s Common Grounds. Each issue consists of two or more short stories, all centered around various branches of the eponymous coffeeshop chain. Common Grounds is the coffeehouse where superheroes – and their enemies – settle back and enjoy some coffee and donuts.
A setting like this alone is a nifty idea, but the stories are way more profound; they deal mainly with the human touch of superhero existence, what it means being and living with superpowers. At times seriously, at other times rather ironically. One could locate Common Grounds in the tradition of the deconstructivist superhero comic, like Alan Moore did in the late 80s or Kurt Busiek later in some episodes of his Astro City series. A school of comic writing where prevalent conventions of narrative and story-telling are broken – or rather twisted in a new shape – and the emotional moment moves into focus. In Common Grounds always accompanied by an ironical side note.
All in all great stories after my fancy. Which – i have to admit – are overshadowed by one of the coolest superheroes of all time. Sadly, he only has a brief appearance in issue 3 of Common Grounds, i would have loved to see more from him. He drives a Volkswagen Beetle with bull antlers installed on the front, accordingly wears the initals VW on his chest and also wears an adequate helmet – again with bull antlers. This appearance is crowned by a pun so simple and at the same time so ridiculous; a pun which interconnects two german terms charged with ambiguous cultural meaning: Volkswagner!
So Common Grounds is greatly recommended, and here is the brief cameo of Volkswagner in full length. I’m still wondering about his superpowers, suggestions are appreciated :) And if you haven’t had enough, here are some more bizarre heroes. Tchus!
